At KPLA, we strongly believe in a STREAM-based approach (science, technology, reading, engineering, arts, and math) to creating a robust curriculum that includes daily emergent literacy activities, STEM, and arts. We currently use a Virginia Department of Education approved curriculum to support our daily lesson plans and thematic units. It is an adaptable curriculum that meets the readiness standards for ages 3-5 by improving language and communication skills, building problem solving and critical thinking skills, and promoting independence, creativity, and self-expression. We also use an award-winning phonics program to reinforce our daily plans, thematic units, and basic concept skills.
Through a delicate balance of teacher-directed activities and child-led play, our day is filled with various activities, such as singing, movement, story time, craft time, circle time, centers, outdoor play, and more. We also have Small Group morning sessions designed to provide more individualized attention for each child and opportunities for the children to work collaboratively on learning new and/or specific skills.
Rounding out our curriculum, we also build language and communication skills by incorporating Spanish and American sign language into our learning objectives. Our enrichment activities have included regularly scheduled Fun Bus sessions, field trips, petting zoos, cooking sessions, music lessons, and more!
